Possible vs. probable

Have you ever had an irrational fear?  One that you KNOW is silly, but you can’t help feeling that tickle of dread or angst?  On more than one occasion I’ve found myself deeply worried about an earthquake that would open up the ground and swallow me whole (anyone else watch “Superman” from the Christopher Reeve era as a kid??!).

This is your life

Many moons ago there was a show called “This Is Your Life”.  Guests would hear voices of people familiar to them recounting a story or saying something lovely about them and then the familiar people would be revealed and the host would say, “This is your life!”

I only vaguely remember this as it was on the airwaves long before I was watching TV, but I remember thinking it was such a lovely idea.  The name of this show came to mind the other day in an unrelated thought:

This life, in all its moments – surprising, calm, joyful, boring, hilarious, quiet, sorrowful – this is your life

And what does that mean to you?

I hear this all the time: “I wish I could just get away from it all and just sit on a beach somewhere!” Mostly people say this, or something like it, when they are fantasizing about getting away from whatever pickle they’re in.

I can relate; I’ve had that same thought myself more than once.

But the thing is, once I get to that beach (or that mountain or forest or other far-away place) and tune out…eventually my thoughts come right back around to the ones that were there before I left.

Because while we may leave home, we never leave ourselves…
