Working with what you've got

The other day I was sitting down to do some writing and realized I only had about 30 minutes before my next client.  Thirty minutes wasn’t possibly enough to write and publish a whole blog post, drat!

So I abandoned my computer, wandered into my living room while I finished my tea and stared out the window.  And those thirty minutes ticked right on by.

You can probably guess what happened after that.  I had another 30-minute block and – well that’s just not enough!  Better to wait until I have a full hour or, even better, unconstrained time, in order to do my very best writing!  I mean, how could I possibly be expected to do great work in such a short stint?!

And, dear readers, this is how I often end up clickety-clacking on my keyboard late on a Sunday evening.  While also self-flagellating for all my dawdling.

Imagine if I had just taken that 30 minutes and gotten started.  Written a few lines or an idea.  Come back with the next 30 minutes and expanded.  Come back with another 15 and refined and edited.

We often need less than we actually think, but we work under an almost hoarder-like mentality of needing endless time (or energy or money or other resource).

What if we worked with exactly what we had at any given time?  What if there weren’t time for a full workout, but we could do 10 pushups and 20 crunches?  What if there weren’t space for a date night, but we stood outside under the stars and held hands and shared something about our day?  What if we couldn’t make a multi-course healthy meal, but we could grab some satiating snacks that would fill our tummies?

What would it be like to work with exactly what you have and making the most of it in any given moment?
