This is your life

Many moons ago there was a show called “This Is Your Life”.  Guests would hear voices of people familiar to them recounting a story or saying something lovely about them and then the familiar people would be revealed and the host would say, “This is your life!”

I only vaguely remember this as it was on the airwaves long before I was watching TV, but I remember thinking it was such a lovely idea.  The name of this show came to mind the other day in an unrelated thought:

This life, in all its moments – surprising, calm, joyful, boring, hilarious, quiet, sorrowful – this is your life.

I’ve noticed I get caught up in moments that are mundane or routine or annoying and think – well, once I do this chore I’ll be off doing something fun and interesting or in great company doing something exciting.

But that’s just it…ALL of those parts are your life.  Each and every one, including the ones that you just want to “get through” to get to the other side of.  Life isn’t only the highs (nor only the lows).  In fact, there are many middling, plateau, boring points that make a life a life.

I’m realizing that navigating this life is not about escaping the lows or prolonging the highs, but about relaxing into moments, no matter where they fall on the spectrum.  Because every moment is one of our moments, and wishing them away (or conversely, holding them overly tightly) diminishes our ability to be in all them.

What moment today could you settle into instead of pushing through or trying to pin down?
