Hitting the reset button

This weekend I spent a beautiful Sonoma day with a friend who is out on the west coast for six weeks escaping the deep east coast winter days and reveling in some Norcal goodness.  She talks about her time as a chance to hit the reset button and it got me thinking about what I want to reset and how to do that.

It can be so easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and have time fly by.  Even as I type this, we’re halfway through the second month of the year…how is that possible?  I’m pretty sure just last week I was helping my parents put up the Christmas lights and finishing off Thanksgiving leftovers.

The day with my friend was a reset in and of itself for me.  Merely taking the time to be really present with a friend, having easy, luxurious conversation over meals, and taking long walks provided the setting to reflect on what’s current in my life and how far apart that is from the life I try to continuously design, day after day.

While my friend’s reset is big – taking weeks to be in a different place – I realized that a reset can be done in small, simple ways, such as having a conversation with a friend.  Just in the course of our afternoon together, I had the space and time to slow down and see how I’ve been meandering a bit aimlessly recently (which is not all bad!) and notice the ways in which I want to tighten up the track.

So in service of the “how” I will do that, I’m declaring here a few of the ways I want to re-focus, because I know that sharing it out adds some accountability for me and makes it more concrete than when it’s just floating around in my head.  Here are a few of the places I want to get back in alignment:

  • Schedule time for adventure.  I know, I know, this sounds a little silly and over-planned.  But here’s the thing – I’ve learned time and again about myself that if I don’t set aside time for something that is solely for pleasure or adventure, I will talk my way into doing something “more productive” instead.  So I’m committed to finding – and protecting – the space and time to head out on an adventure.

  • Get back to my Spanish.  I love learning new languages and always enjoyed Spanish in school.  Last summer, I had a tutor I would talk to twice a week and podcasts I listened to and my skills really improved after some time.  I miss having those touchpoints, so I’m reinstating my podcast listening as a start.

In what small way could you have a reset today, and what specifically will you reset?
