The answer is always connection
Last week I found myself wandering aimlessly through possible blog topics, uninspired. I even sat myself down, with no distractions and nothing else to work on but the blog…and nada. Zippo. Blank-page-itis. I gave up for the day and met a friend for a drink.
And that’s when I remembered. Connection is the answer to just about any stymied state.
Feeling confused? Call a friend. Mad about something that happened at work? Vent it to someone who cares about you. Feeling aimless or bored? Engage in a conversation with someone and be open to the random inspiration that often comes from an unexpected comment or observation by someone else.
Recently I was listening to Simon Sinek’s podcast and he was talking about tough times in the pandemic and how he and his friends shared a commitment: “No one cries alone.” When you need someone, reach for them, whoever that might be, for whatever reason. Sometimes, it could even be a stranger on the stool next to you at a bar, the librarian stocking the shelves while you roam, or the ticket-taker on the train.
After having drinks with my friend, I left lit up with ideas from our conversation. Just in the random trails our discussion followed, we dabbled in everything from community to politics to travel to language. Wide ranging, far reaching, and all from our barstools.
That muck I felt stuck in just melted away.
We’re meant to be in community. So much of our daily lives seems to isolate us, but whenever I’m in the company of others, I’m reminded that that is where the spice of life really appears.
