The Main Thing

I’ve seen this several different places, though I can’t remember who originally said it (maybe Peter Drucker??):

The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.

I love two things about this:  the sheer ridiculousness of how it sounds when you say it out loud, and the power in its delightful simplicity.  So many times, we get caught up in that which is, frankly, not at all the main thing.

So on this first week of the new year, I will keep this utterly simple and tie this great quote to the thing that comes around this time every year, which are resolutions or big plans for who we want to be or what we want to do.  Before you slide down into that giant ball-pit of resolutions that will eventually end up with you putting a brand new treadmill on craigslist or watching your Instant Pot gather dust, try these two simple things:

  1. Decide what you really really want (see last week’s post for more on this)

  2. Pick ONE thing (just one!!), and take the first, easiest step forward

THAT’S IT.

Make it so simple that you can’t possibly be flooded by overwhelm or details or intricate battle-level schematics that make you just want to give up and go take a nap.  And when you finish that one thing, pat yourself on the back and glide smoothly onto the next.

May this year be the year you slow down enough to get what you want without making yourself crazy!
